The Piano as the Perfect Instrument for Beginners

If you are the beginning of your music training, we strongly recommend that you consider taking piano or keyboard lessons at The YOU, for several reasons:

• The piano is fairly easy to start; it does not require special skills in tone production, intonation, or embouchure.  This means that students can achieve nice results early on with relatively little effort. In turn, quick successes in learning the instrument can motivate students to stick with their lessons and take their skills to the next level.

• The piano/keyboard is an extremely versatile instrument that can be used in a great variety of musical contexts--solo playing; chamber music; concertos with orchestra; and Rock Bands, to name a few.

• Since playing the piano involves both linear/melodic and vertical/harmonic thinking, it builds a solid musical foundation.  This gives young piano students a head start on music theory as well as on any other instrument they may choose to learn.

For young children starting piano or keyboard, we often recommend group piano lessons, in preparation for private piano instruction.  

We have seen time and again that most children younger than 5 years of age have difficulty succeeding in individual piano lessons; they tend to lack the attention span to enjoy the full range of benefits from concentrated one-on-one lessons with their teacher.  The children's frustration in music lessons--as well as their parents' disappointment with the situation--can become so overwhelming that they may stop lessons altogether.  Consequently, believing that music is just not for them, they may never return. 

To avoid this very unfortunate outcome, please consider enrolling your young child in group keyboard classes first, before advancing to private lessons. Just a few months to a year can make an enormous difference in how your child will respond to the structured and disciplined environment of a lesson program.  Once he is prepared mentally and physically, music lessons will likely be a much more enjoyable and positive experience.

Do I Have to Own an Instrument?

Piano and Keyboard students should own, or at least have regular access to, a suitable keyboard instrument for weekly practice.  If you or your child has played the electric keyboard for a year or two and wishes to concentrate on classical piano studies, it would be appropriate to switch to an acoustic piano.  Though the more expensive keyboards often have "weighted keys," they are not the same, in feel or sound, as an acoustic piano.

But Acoustic Pianos Are Expensive!

Some are, indeed.  However, in today's market there are many great opportunities to purchase pianos fairly inexpensively, especially if they are pre-owned.  If purchasing a piano is not anything you'd like to consider, we can offer you a wonderful alternative: through our relationship with the Jacobs Music company in Willow Grove, you can rent a brand-new acoustic piano at very low monthly rates!
