Conceived by Janpanese violinist Shin'ichi Suzuki, the Suzuki method of teaching and learning music is based on Suzuki's observations that young children acquire language skills very easily, by listening to and imitating words spoken to them.  Suzuki argued that with proper guidance, preschool children have the ability to learn music in a similar fashion, i.e., by frequent exposure to music and music-making, and, at least in the early stages, by playing by ear rather than reading notes on a page.  Moreover, the Suzuki method emphasizes ensemble playing in unisons as it develops listening skills and sharpens the student's sense of intonation.

Though the Suzuki method was originally devised for the study of violin, it has since been adapted for many other instruments, and is now taught in many parts of the world.
